BUNDALA NATIONAL PARK
We provide four main safari options in Bundala.
ABOUT BUNDALA NATIONAL PARK
Bundala National Park, an enchanting haven nestled in the heart of Sri
Lanka, holds international acclaim as a vital sanctuary for migratory
water birds during the winter season. This natural wonderland welcomes
these magnificent avian travelers, offering them respite and
sustenance within its pristine boundaries. With a staggering count of
197 bird species, Bundala emerges as a haven of ornithological
splendor. Among its many delights, the greater flamingo takes center
stage, gracing the park with its majestic presence as it descends upon
the land in vast flocks.
As you explore the captivating landscapes of Bundala, a world teeming
with life unfolds before your eyes. Keep a keen watch, and you may be
rewarded with glimpses of elusive creatures such as crocodiles,
mischievous monkeys, wild boars, agile mongooses, stealthy monitor
lizards, and even the awe-inspiring elephants. Each encounter with
these denizens of the wild brings an air of excitement, offering a
window into the intricate tapestry of biodiversity that thrives within
the park.
Recognizing its invaluable contribution to wildlife conservation,
Bundala was officially designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1969,
safeguarding its fragile ecosystems. Building upon this foundation, it
was proudly elevated to the status of a national park on the 4th of
January, 1993. Bundala's significance was further amplified in 1991
when it earned the prestigious distinction of becoming the first
wetland in Sri Lanka to be declared a Ramsar site. This international
recognition cemented its place among the world's most vital wetland
habitats.
The accolades bestowed upon Bundala National Park do not end there. In
2005, it was granted the esteemed title of a biosphere reserve by
UNESCO, standing as the fourth biosphere reserve within Sri Lanka.
This distinguished recognition pays tribute to the park's exceptional
ecological value and its crucial role in preserving the delicate
balance between nature and human existence.
Situated approximately 245 kilometers (152 miles) southeast of
Colombo, Bundala National Park beckons adventurers from far and wide.
Its enchanting landscapes and thriving biodiversity offer an
